What are the “pros” and “cons” of using a Doula?

-You and your partner will receive encouragement and support
-Unlike the nursing staff who have to care for several birthing women, your doula will provide you with one-on-one attention during your labor and delivery
-Pain management which includes natural methods like massage, meditation, breathing exercises, and birthing positions
-Partners will receive individualized coaching as well, to help reduce the feelings of being overwhelmed.

Although the benefits of the “pros” for including a doula as part of your birth plan are felt to outweigh the “cons”, it is worthwhile to consider the potential drawbacks of working with a doula.

-they may get in the way of your partner
-their services can be expensive
-they may be inexperienced, or don’t seem to understand what your wishes are
-they do not have as much training as your healthcare provider
